The weather during spring time has a tendency to be unpredictable at times, some days it will feel like a nice picnic day then an hour later it could be raining cats and dogs. But when April rolls around, you begin to hear "April showers bring May flowers". Here we take a deeper look into the meaning of this historic phrase.

History Of The Phrase

This historical phrase dates back to 1886 and was known as a proverb that went "March winds & April showers bring forth May flowers". This term originated in the United Kingdom where April was, and still is, generally a rainy time of the year.

When we transition from winter time to spring, groups of strong winds, also known as jet streams, go northern in the month of April. This results in the air pressure changing and leads to the eruption of cumulus clouds that form from water vapor condensing in the air. To explain in detail, the air around us is still cool from the winter but the ground starts to warm up from the spring sunshine. So when the warm air from the ground gets pushed higher, moisture condenses causing a rain shower. And it just so happens that this occurs when spring time rolls around, bringing us to our next topic, you should waterproof at this time!

Time To Waterproof

Although we want to be excited for the flowers to blossom in May, it's important to make sure your basement has a waterproofing system if you live in an area with high volumes of rain during the spring time. It's also important to note that all the snow from previous weeks start to melt away, but don't go away that easy. That snow turns into water, which is a basements' worst enemy when it comes to staying dry. We highly recommend to prepare your basement for the all the water trying to get in so you won't experience floods, mold growth or structural damage. Just imagine how good it would feel to admire the flowers while having a dry basement!
